Objectives of the Department :
Chemistry being a physical science, it aims at the development of scientific attitude among learners. It is helpful in removing the superstitions, false beliefs, wrong notions prevalent in the society and cultivates the habits of proper reasoning, observation and experiment. It trains the student in the method of science and helps to develop scientific temper.
The knowledge of chemistry in the present-day world is essential for almost all the professions and vocations. As our aim is to vocational education, we must prepare our students for the different occupations and vocations. This knowledge of chemistry enables them to take up some occupations for which the knowledge of the subject may be essential. The knowledge is helpful in developing skills pertaining to scientific observations and experimentation.
So, the objectives of chemistry curriculum are as follows:
- To evoke interest in chemistry and help in the acquisition of knowledge of the subject.
- To improve and strengthen the knowledge of chemistry.
- To develop in students a scientific culture.
- To cater to the needs of advanced knowledge of chemistry, methods of science, intellectual abilities and skills.
- To help the students to acquire advanced knowledge of the subject and prepare them for taking up independent research.
Relevance of the Subject :
The origins of chemical science predate recorded history. But all our current civilizations have developed on chemical principles. There is no Chemical activity which does not involve chemistry. Chemistry is our constant Companion. The food we eat, the beverages we drink, the clothes we wear, the air we breathe, the medicines we take, the soap and toothpaste we use etc. are Chemicals. The functioning of the human body can be described on the basis of complex biochemical reactions.
Chemistry deals essentially with the composition and properties of matter and hence, the behavior of natural world. Chemistry is not an isolated subject.A sound understanding of the chemical principles is very much essential in the study of various other branches of science such as molecular biology, biotechnology, life sciences, material sciences, atmospheric and environmental sciences, and pharmaceutical sciences etc. blends all other science branches, particularly, physics and biology. Hence it is an interdisciplinary subject and so it is rightly said that CHEMISTRY IS MOTHER OF SCIENCE. It has an extensive scope of study. Its study is a never-ending affair.
The traditional branches of chemistry as physical, inorganic, organic and analytical have their origin in the past activities of chemists and the same trend is followed in the present chemistry curriculum. However, because of its strong interactions with other scientific disciplines such as physics, biology, medicine, agriculture etc., a large number of new branches such as biochemistry, pharmaceutical chemistry, industrial chemistry, agricultural chemistry, medicinal chemistry, polymer chemistry, quantum chemistry is fast emerging as important fields of study. Besides, chemists work in areas described as interfaces such as molecular biology, solid state science, biotechnology, biogenetics to name a few. Needless to say, newer areas of chemistry are constantly coming to the forefront and perhaps no other branch of science has made so much progress in the last 50 years or so.
History of the Department :
Our college was started in 1969 and the science faculty was added in 1972. Siddapur is an educationally backward taluk and ours is the only degree college in it. As there was much pressure from the public to start science degree course in our college, our management decided to start P.U. Science course in 1972. Then onwards, the students passing out P.U. Science demanded degree course in science and hence in 1991 B.Sc. degree course was started. This has provided an opportunity to science students to continue with B.Sc. course, otherwise, they would have diverted to B.A. or B.Com. courses or gone to distant places for pursuing science course. But still science section till today remains unaided and the entire financial support is provided by the management.
Chemistry is one of the core subjects in B.Sc. degree course. Graduates with B.Sc. chemistry are in great demand in educational institutions, public sector undertakings, lab and research institutions and private sector industries. So despite various limitations and problems, we have succeeded in building a good department of chemistry over the years and produce many graduates with distinction and a university topper in the subject. The student strength in the department has continuously increased over the years both at P.U. and degree levels and we boast of very high percentage of results every year.
Future Plans of the Department :
Extension of the existing laboratory by providing store room for storing chemicals, a small room for keeping ‘kipp’s apparatus’ to prepare HS gas and a fuming chamber for keeping strong acids and building up of senior laboratory with all facilities.
- Subscribing more science magazines and journals to the department to update the knowledge of the subject.
- Providing audio visual aids wherever possible to help better understanding of the subject.
- Encouraging students to write scientific essays and articles.
- Encouraging and guiding students to participate in A.I.R. talks and in competitions.
- Organizing guest lectures from eminent scientists or experts in the subject.
- Organizing science quiz and exhibitions to increase the knowledge of subject in the students.
- Establishment of alumni of chemistry students.
The following lecturers have worked as lecturers in our college :
