Mathematics

Objectives of the department:

From ancient days familiarity with Mathematics and necessity of Mathematics in life has been regarded as an indispensable part of intellectual equipment of every cultured person. A layman also needs simple mathematical operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division of numbers etc., without the knowledge that he is using formal mathematics. The teaching of Mathematics is sometimes degenerated into empty drill in problem solving, which may develop formal ability but does not lead to real understanding orto greater intellectual independence. It is rightly said by an eminent scholar that “mathematics is a frozen beauty”. It is frozen but it has a beauty. Actual contact with content of living mathematics is necessary. It requires a certain degree of intellectual maturity and a willingness to do some thinking on one’s own.

Also, it is said that Mathematics is “Queen of Science”. So, it is the basic requirement to Study different subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and so on. At High School level students may not go deep into mathematical order so they may not enjoy its beauty. But at this graduate level they develop their logical and scientific thinking. They comprehend and enjoy the beauty of mathematics better not only beauty and amusement in learning mathematics but also, they can appreciate the use and application in different fields of their studies. Also, mathematics is so precise in its explanation that no one can give many answers for the same questions. So that the student gets full marks in the examination. This helps one for a good future career also.

Considering all these facts our Management and members of Staff felt that it is necessary to provide the education in Mathematics at B.Sc. level and provided for it in this college from 1991 onwards,

History of the department:

  1. Department was started on 15-06-1991.
  2. Prof. S. V. Bhatta was appointed in the college to teach mathematics for degree classes which was started in 1991. She was the head of department until her retirement from service in August 2004. In 1991 Prof. G. K. Hegde was appointed as a lecturer. In 1993 Prof. AshalataBhat was appointed as a lecturer in the department. The results in the first year was 100% and in the subsequent years also there were good results. The teachers in the department are well qualified and competent in teaching and creating interest in the subject. There are sufficient and exhaustive books and journals in the library as the text and reference books. Teachers take sufficient care for the students to score well in Examinations, and guiding to use the necessary books in the library not only from the point of view of examination but also to enrich their knowledge.

The following lecturers have worked as lecturers in our college.,:

Vinod Gaitonde, Shubha Hegde, SangeethaPatil, VinayakNaik, Narendra.

Presently  Prof.  A.R.Priya Lecturer have been working Head of the Department and Miss  Shambhavi D. Acharya is also working in our department as a Lecturer.
