Objectives of the Department :
The Department of English was established along with the college in the year 1969. Earlier English is one of the compulsory subjects at the U.G. level, but now due to NEP (New Education Policy) English is not mandatory. In addition to compulsory Basic English the erst while Principal and the Management thought it necessary to provide the facility to study English as an optional means DSCC (Discipline Specific Core Course) also. This aim was to enhance the overall proficiency of students in English in view of the national and global relevance of the language. English is a language of opportunities. It is the medium of instruction in Higher Education. It is unavoidable in interstate and international relations. The distance between nations is shrinking fast due to liberalization and globalization. Notable feature of the emerging job market is that they are skill based. Hence fluency in English is inevitable who aspire to get employment in today’s world keeping in mind such a scenario we have set following goals and objectives to imbibe comprehensive knowledge of English.
- Foremost use of English in India as a language of knowledge. So to develop the skills of reading with comprehension is the main objective.
- To develop writing skills. It includes enabling the student in writing letters, reports, essays and other scholarly papers.
- To develop conversational skills in English also an essential goal of the course as one has to walk today in a globalised atmosphere.
History of the Department :
The Department had two learned teachers to begin with Dr. Divaspathi Hegde and Prof. I. G. Patil. Their expertise in the subject and dedication to teaching laid a strong foundation to the department later in 1976 Prof. N. N. Sabhahit who had been serving in MES College Sirsi as a Reader in English joined the college as the Principal. He became the Head of the Department also besides the Principal. Two years later Shri S. M. Hegde joined the department as a lecturer. Together they by their extraordinary scholarly teaching skill made the department extremely popular as a result of which it attracted a steady flow of students and trend persists till date. Dr. Divaspati Hegde and Prof. S. M. Hegde left the department in 1977 and 1986 respectively to take up better appointment elsewhere. In 1986 Prof. V. S. Hegde joined the department being transferred from S.V.S. College Bantval (D.K.). He had by then put in about 10 years service in teaching and was a Post Graduate Diploma holder in the Teaching of English (P.G.D.T.E.) from Central Institute of English Hyderabad, he retired from the service in the year 2011. Shri P. Kannan was appointed in 1994. He served as N.S.S. Officer for three years. After serving here for about ten years he left the department in pursuit of better prospects. In the meanwhile, Prof. N.N. Sabhahit retired from service in 1996. Prof. L.G. Patil has retired from service in February 2004. Prof. V. S. Hegde has retired from service in 2011. Since 2014 Dr. Devanampriya M. working as a permanent faculty in the department of English. Shri Manoj Kumar joined in the year June 2013 and left the job for better opportunity. Shri Mahabalesh B. since 2008 working in the department as a guest faculty.
