Siddapur which is very near to world famous Jog falls and Banavasi which inspired Adikavi Pampa, one of the great poets of Kannada. It has all the beauty and diversity of Malenad region. On the one side there is Sharavati river valley and on the other side the valley of river Aghanashini. In between, there exist hundreds of waterfalls, rivulets and streams. Historically important Golabhavi, Jain Basadi, Fort, many temples of Bilagi, dense forests with rich biodiversity, in addition to it multiplicity of languages are some of the unique features of this place.

Objectives of the Department :
Kannada is the mother tongue of 45 million people of Karnataka. The importance of the mother tongue can never be over stated. All ideas and experiences are best expressed in one’s mother tongue. It is the vehicle of our culture. Moreover, it is the medium of administration in the State. So, the study of Kannada is unavoidable in Karnataka. Every institution providing higher education must offer courses in kannada language and literature. Therefore it was introduced as a basic subject as soon as the college was established. In course of time, provisions were made for the study of Kannada language and literature as a special subject.
Knowledge of Kannada literature is essential in the present scenario. The value system can be strengthened through the literary works of great scholars. So, the department focuses on providing literature knowledge as well as the value system. Kannada is a classical language with rich heritage of thousands of years. It is the duty of everyone living in Karnataka to sustain/develop the language in all its past glory. The department has been trying to bring in this awareness among public also, in its own limits.
History of the Department :
The department was opened with an intention to provide facilities for study of Kannada language and literature to the rural students in 1969. Prof. M.R.Anavatti headed the department initially during 1969 and 1970. Later from 01-06-1970 onwards Prof. R.M.Bhat joined the department. An astute scholar of Kannada literature, he was an out-standing teacher of Old Kannada literature and Kannada grammar. Dr. R.P.Hegde joined the department on 01-07-1981. He was a reputed teacher of history of literature, prosody,poetics and linguistics. He was awarded doctorate degree by Karnataka University for his thesis on the “Comparative study of Shishunal Shareef and Sant Kabeer”. He is author of literary works and a good public speaker as well. He retired voluntarialy on 31-07-2002. During the same period G. S. Bhat, T. A. Hegde, Shantala Hegde, Veena T. Hegde, Vishwanath, Sahan Dixit, Prashant L. Hegde, Dr. Rajeev R. Hegde, Ratnakar G. Naik, Ramachandra Madival, Rajashree Raykar worked in the department as a Guest lecturer.
Dr. Vittal Bhandari joined the department on 01-07-1994. He was reputed teacher of History of Literature, prosody ,poetics, criticism, cultural studies. He was awarded doctorate degree by Kuvempu University, Shivamogga for his thesis on the “ Class conflicts in Kannada Novels”. He is author of literary works, Racial studies and cultural studies. He is a good public orator and social activist. We had lost him in the second wave of covid pandemic, it was great loss to the department , literary and cultural field.
Presently Prof.Jagannath N. Moger, Assistant Professor have been working as Head of the Department.
