Department of Physical Education

The Department of Physical Education has been part of the college since 1969, running sports and athletics throughout the year for the all-round development of students.

Objectives

Physical education is an integral part of education; any educational programme is incomplete without provision to keep students active, healthy, strong and energetic. Purely academic study without discipline and activity can leave students careless, irregular and lazy in their habits, which is why educationists stress physical education in schools and colleges.

Its aim is the overall physical, social, spiritual and mental development of students: first and foremost to produce useful citizens, and also to produce good national and international players.

History of the department

Sports have been part of the college's curriculum since its inception in 1969, and staff members who are keen sportspeople play alongside and guide the students. Sri V. U. Hegde (1977-2012), Sri Sanjay Gouda (2013-14) and Sri T. B. Gouda (2014-18) have served the department. Sri Sagar Y. Patil was appointed Physical Director in 2019.

Facilities

  • A 110 m × 90 m playground in front of the college with a 200 m running track and areas for throwing and jumping events
  • A 40 × 20 indoor sports room with two table-tennis tables and five carrom boards
  • Courts for kabaddi, kho-kho, volleyball, ball badminton and tennis, and a cricket pitch
  • Uniforms and equipment for all teams playing at the inter-collegiate level
  • TA and DA for players to meet their daily dietary needs
  • Best Sportsman and Best Sportswoman awards every year

How students are trained

At admission the Physical Director explains the sports facilities and guides students based on their physique, interests, previous participation and achievements. They receive coaching and training and are encouraged to practise regularly before or after college hours.

Selection trials in athletics and games are held to form college teams. Selected players get fixed practice times and, based on their performance and conduct, are sent to zonal and inter-collegiate tournaments. A two-day college athletics meet is held on an Olympic theme, along with class-wise and section-wise annual competitions and an annual prize distribution. Sportspersons who bring laurels at inter-collegiate, zonal and inter-zonal events receive special honours.
