Department of Zoology

Zoology has been offered as an optional subject in the B.Sc. course since 1993-94, giving local students the chance to study life sciences without leaving Siddapur.

Objectives

Science is an integral part of modern life, and its applications in industry, agriculture, medicine, transport and communication have greatly advanced human well-being. As a branch of life science, zoology helps remove superstitious beliefs, cultivates reasoning, observation and practical skills, and promotes critical thinking and a scientific attitude.

  • To create interest in life science and help students acquire knowledge of the subject.
  • To improve and strengthen their knowledge of zoology.
  • To develop a scientific attitude.
  • To train students in the technical knowledge, intellectual abilities and skills of life science.
  • To help students acquire advanced knowledge and motivate them towards research.
  • To train students in the scientific method, scientific thinking and reasoning.
  • To increase their vocational efficiency.

History of the department

The college was started in 1969. Siddapur is an educationally backward taluk and this is its only degree college, so public demand led the management to start the PU science course in 1972 and, as PU students then demanded a degree course, the B.Sc. degree in 1991-92.

The zoology combination was introduced in 1993-94, allowing science students to continue their B.Sc. with zoology as an optional subject instead of going to distant places. The section remains unaided, with the management providing the entire financial support. Despite many limitations, the department has produced many graduates with distinction and high results every year.
