Not me, but you.
Objectives
NSS links ‘Campus and Community’, ‘College and Village’ and ‘Knowledge and Action’. It helps volunteers:
- Understand the community they work in, and themselves in relation to it.
- Identify the needs and problems of the community and take part in solving them.
- Develop a sense of social and civic responsibility.
- Use their knowledge to find practical solutions to individual and community problems.
- Gain skills in mobilising community participation.
- Acquire leadership qualities and democratic values.
- Build the capacity to meet emergencies and natural disasters.
- Practise national integration and social harmony.
What NSS does in college
- Community outreach: volunteers identify local needs, often in rural and under-served areas, and work on solutions.
- Seven-day special camp: focused projects on village development, infrastructure and social awareness.
- Awareness campaigns: literacy, health (blood donation, AIDS awareness), environment (tree planting, less plastic) and social evils.
- Personality development: self-confidence, leadership, discipline and empathy.
- Disaster management: training to help in emergencies and natural disasters.
- National integration: cultural understanding, brotherhood and communal harmony.
- Educational support: literacy drives and, in some cases, computer education for the community.
Expected outcomes
- Personal growth: self-confidence, courage, patience and a positive attitude, with stronger leadership and organising skills.
- Social responsibility: a sense of involvement in national development and community welfare.
- Community engagement: an understanding of community needs and the skills to mobilise people.
- Practical experience: first-hand exposure to life in villages.
- Networking: meeting people from diverse backgrounds, which fosters national integration.
- Recognition: special camp participation and certificates, which can carry preference in higher studies or employment.
